Doraemon x Gucci Lunar New Year 2021

As an anime fan, you can only imagine the excitement I had when this release first dropped.

For those that don’t know, the new Gucci Doraemon collection is part of Gucci’s Lunar New Year capsule, and is only available for a limited time. It was funny how I stumbled across this collection actually: I was browsing the new Jackie 1961 collection under the “What’s New” tab in early January, and there it was: Doraemon x Gucci and I lost my marbles. How was this not publicized?? How did I just randomly stumble across this??? I had been patiently awaiting for my two worlds - anime and high-fashion - to gloriously collide and there it was, right in front of me. As you can imagine, I promptly placed an order for the thing I wanted most from the collection (review coming soon!). I realized at the time though, that the production of the entire lineup wasn’t complete, which is probably why Gucci waited until February to start heavily advertising the collection. (At the time I ordered my item, Doraemon products with the ox horns were not available). Though I only managed to grab one thing from this collaboration, here are the pieces from the collection that piqued my interest (Photos courtesy of Gucci.com):

Doraemon x Gucci women’s Ace sneaker

I’m honestly in that boat of people who had grown a little tired of the new ace sneaker, but with this release, my excitement has been restored! The ox Doraemon is just so cool against the signature Gucci green and red stripes and honestly- who doesn’t love a good white sneaker?

Doraemon x Gucci men’s Rhyton sneaker

This model actually debuted on Gucci’s website prior to any other Doraemon sneaker, and this one had caught my eye, because of the shape and simplicity of the design. Unless you knew about this particular collaboration, you wouldn’t necessarily think this sneaker was from Gucci- and if you know my taste by now, I love those IYKYK (if you know you know) goods!

Doraemon x Gucci mini bag

So this is actually the bag I personally ordered, and I ordered it because 1. I had been eyeing the same model in the Ophidia style for several years, and 2. because look at all the cute Doraemon faces! Especially in today’s climate, I don’t find myself having to carry many things because quick trips are usually what I take when I’m out, and I feel like this bag holds the perfect amount of things to run some quick errands or to grab a quick bite to eat! Many have had the same idea as me, because even in the limited amount of time that I’m out, I have seen this bag three times already! A more in-depth review coming soon.

Doraemon x Gucci medium beauty case

I know this is marketed more as a beauty trunk case, but this is such an interesting concept for a shoulder bag/handbag! I personally wouldn’t wear it crossbody or anything, but I really like the structured “small suitcase” look, and as styled above, it just looks really cool. Let’s be honest - if you saw someone wearing this outfit, wouldn’t you think they’re a cool kid? I def would. Obviously, this is more of a statement piece than a practical bag, but hey, if you can afford it- why not?

Doraemon x Gucci cotton dress

First off, I love that they used the vintage Gucci monogram in this collection. Doraemon, himself, has been around for several decades, and I feel it’s appropriate to pay homage to the fact that he’s been a prominent character in Japanese media for that long. I understand that this dress might not be everyone’s cup of tea and some might think it sits awkwardly especially in the lower half; however, I had to include this one on the list just because of the styling in this picture. The Jackie 1961 small hobo bag in light blue leather paired with the shimmery tights just give this dress such a sophisticated feel and I honestly never thought I’d ever be saying that about a dress with silly Doraemon faces plastered all over it!

Doraemon x Gucci nylon GG jacket

If I could get any piece of clothing from this collection, I would’ve gotten this one. I ended up not purchasing this one though, as while I admire it, it’s still a bit too flashy for my taste. Although marketed as a men’s jacket, I’ve seen many Instagram influencers - both men and female - rock this piece! Again, we have the Gucci vintage monogram print as well as the many Doraemon faces covered all over. The best thing about this jacket in my opinion is the material. The shiny nylon material compared to the previous cotton dress just gives it a very high-street feel, and it really caters to its audience.

Doraemon x Gucci Dive watch, 40mm

What a darling watch! I feel like Gucci has really been stepping up their watch game, and this one definitely fits into that trend! I ended up not purchasing this one as the strap is a bit too flashy for my taste (love monogram in mini bags and SLG’s but not usually on watch straps or large bags or clothing), but if the strap had come in a perhaps solid color strap, I would’ve snagged it for sure. So for those who love monogram and were looking for a new fun watch, this one is definitely a contender!

Doraemon x Gucci silk neck bow

This piece has the lowest retail price in this collection, and it’s probably the most versatile! I wish I would’ve picked this up before it had sold out online, because I would’ve loved to pair it with my black Jackie 1961 and some new pink bags I just got in. If you can find these in store, don’t miss out like I did!
